Lighting Installation in Scottsdale and the Phoenix Valley

Why Lighting Installation in Arizona Isn’t Like Anywhere Else

Most lighting advice you will find online was written for a climate that does not exist here, and following it will cost you money. Four local conditions change how lighting should be specified and installed in the Valley.

Attic Heat and Early Fixture Failure

A Phoenix-area attic routinely exceeds 150°F in July and August. Every recessed light you install puts a driver — the small electronic power supply inside the fixture — into that environment. Bargain big-box housings are often rated for a maximum ambient temperature well below what a Scottsdale attic actually reaches, which is why so many homeowners call us in year two or three with lights that flicker, buzz, or have simply died. We specify fixtures rated for high ambient temperatures and, where the layout allows, position drivers in cooler locations. It costs slightly more up front and it is the single biggest difference between a lighting job that lasts fifteen years and one that lasts three.

Insulation Contact and Air Sealing

Any recessed housing that will touch or be covered by insulation must be IC-rated, and in a home with blown-in cellulose or fiberglass batts that is most of them. We also use air-sealed housings wherever possible, because an unsealed can light is a hole between your conditioned living space and a 150°F attic. On a whole-house recessed lighting project, sealing those penetrations is a real, measurable reduction in what your air conditioning has to fight all summer.

Dust, Monsoon Rain, and Outdoor Fixtures

Haboobs drive fine dust into any exterior fixture that is not properly gasketed, and the first heavy August rain finds every enclosure that was not rated for wet locations. Outdoor lighting here needs wet-location-listed fixtures, weatherproof boxes with in-use covers, GFCI protection where code requires it, and waterproof connections at every splice — not the wire nuts and electrical tape we regularly find on failed do-it-yourself landscape jobs.

Dark-Sky Ordinances in Scottsdale and Nearby Communities

Scottsdale has an outdoor lighting ordinance, and several of the communities we serve — including Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, Carefree, and Paradise Valley — have their own requirements governing fixture shielding, mounting height, brightness, and color temperature. Full-cutoff and shielded fixtures are not a design preference in these areas, they are a compliance issue, and getting it wrong can mean a correction notice or an HOA dispute. Recessed Lighting Installation

Recessed lighting is the most requested lighting upgrade we do, and it transforms a room more than almost any other electrical project. Adding it to a room that has none is completely routine. We run new circuits through the attic where there is access, or through the ceiling in slab homes and areas with no attic space above, keeping openings small and patchable.

Layout comes before fixtures. We space lights based on ceiling height and room dimensions so you get even illumination without the runway-lighting look, and we account for where you actually stand and work rather than simply centering everything. Beam angle and trim style are matched to the job. We recommend color temperature deliberately: generally 2700K to 3000K for living rooms and bedrooms where warm light is what you want, and 3500K to 4000K for garages, laundry rooms, and task areas. We also favor fixtures with a CRI of 90 or above, because high color rendering is the difference between your paint and cabinetry looking the way you chose them and looking slightly grey.

We install traditional new-construction and remodel housings as well as modern canless wafer fixtures, which are shallower and often the right answer in ceilings with tight joist bays or ductwork in the way. If you have existing 5-inch or 6-inch cans with old incandescent trims, retrofitting them to LED is usually a fast, high-value upgrade that cuts lighting energy use sharply without opening up the ceiling.

Kitchen and Under-Cabinet Lighting

Kitchens are where bad lighting is most obvious, because you are doing detailed work with your own body between the ceiling fixture and the countertop. Under-cabinet lighting fixes that. We install hardwired LED strip and puck systems with the wiring concealed inside the cabinet run, driver placement planned for both access and heat, and dimming so the same lights work for cooking and for a low glow at night.

We also handle pendant lighting over islands and breakfast bars, adding new ceiling boxes where none exist and coordinating the layout with your recessed and under-cabinet layers so the room has actual lighting design rather than three unrelated systems fighting each other.

Chandeliers, Pendants, and High-Ceiling Fixtures

Hanging a heavy fixture is a structural question as much as an electrical one. Standard ceiling boxes are not rated for the weight of most chandeliers, so we install listed fixture-support boxes and braces rated for the actual load. We handle two-story entryways and vaulted great rooms with the right equipment, deal with sloped-ceiling adapters and canopy fitment, and install remote-control or motorized lifts where a fixture needs to come down for cleaning. Dimmers, Smart Lighting, and Lighting Controls

This is where more lighting projects go wrong than anywhere else. Not every LED dims well, and not every dimmer works with every LED. Buzzing, flickering, a narrow dimming range, or lights that drop out at twenty percent are almost always a compatibility problem between the fixture driver and the dimmer type. We match dimmers to fixtures, including ELV and low-voltage-specific dimmers where the load requires them, so you get smooth, quiet dimming all the way down.

For smart lighting we install Lutron, Leviton, and comparable systems, and we handle the part that trips up do-it-yourself installs: many smart switches require a neutral conductor at the switch box, and plenty of older Scottsdale homes do not have one. We confirm what is actually in the box before recommending a system, and where a neutral genuinely is not available we specify hardware that does not need one. We also set up three-way and multi-location dimming, occupancy and vacancy sensors, timers, photocells, and astronomic timers that follow sunrise and sunset through the year instead of needing to be reset every season. Outdoor, Landscape, and Security Lighting

Exterior lighting is what makes a desert property look intentional after dark, and it is a genuine security layer. We install low-voltage landscape systems with properly sized transformers, wire gauge selected to control voltage drop across long runs, and direct-burial cable at appropriate depth. Undersized wire on a long run is exactly why the fixtures at the far end of a do-it-yourself system are always dimmer than the ones near the transformer.

How Our Lighting Installation Process Works

We start with a walkthrough of the space and a conversation about how you actually use each room, because the right layout for a room you read in is different from the right layout for a room you cook in. From there we put together a layout and fixture recommendation with specific color temperature, beam angle, and dimming choices, and you get a clear written estimate before anything begins.

On install day we protect floors and furniture, cut only what is needed, and keep openings small and patchable. Then we test every fixture, dimmer, and control with you, walk you through how the system operates, clean up completely, and haul away the old fixtures.

Most single-room projects are finished in a day. Larger whole-house projects are staged so you are never left without working lighting.

What Lighting Installation Costs

Cost depends on the number of fixtures, whether a circuit already exists or new wiring has to be run, ceiling height and attic access, fixture quality and dimming type, and whether patching or painting is needed afterward. Do you install smart lighting and dimmers?

What color temperature should I choose?

For living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas, 2700K to 3000K gives the warm light most homeowners want. For kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, and workshops, 3500K to 4000K reads cleaner and is better for detailed tasks.
