Fan-Rated Boxes: What Most DIY Installs Get Wrong
This is the single most common problem we find. The round or octagonal box holding your existing light fixture is very likely not rated to carry a ceiling fan. Electrical code requires that any outlet box used as the sole support for a ceiling-suspended fan be specifically listed and marked for that purpose, because a fan applies constant vibration and dynamic load that a standard fixture box was never designed to take. Heavier fans need additional support beyond the box itself.
A fan hung on the wrong box may hold for a year or two. Then the screws work loose, the wobble worsens, and eventually something gives. We verify the box on every job, and when it is not rated we install a proper fan-rated box with a brace spanning the joists, usually without cutting more drywall than the existing hole.

Choosing the Right Size and Mounting Height
Fan size should match the room, not the showroom display. As a general guide, rooms up to about 75 square feet suit a blade span of 29 to 36 inches, rooms from 75 to 150 square feet suit 36 to 44 inches, rooms from 150 to 225 square feet suit 44 to 54 inches, and larger living areas and great rooms want 54 inches or more. Long or L-shaped rooms are often better served by two smaller fans than one oversized one, because a single fan only moves air in the column beneath it.
Height matters just as much. Blades should sit at least seven feet above the floor, and eight to nine feet is the sweet spot for airflow. Standard eight-foot ceilings usually call for a flush-mount or low-profile hugger fan. Nine-foot ceilings work well with a short downrod, and from there the rod length grows with the ceiling: roughly a foot of downrod for a ten-foot ceiling, two feet for a twelve-foot ceiling, and three feet or more for a fourteen-foot ceiling. Vaulted, Sloped, and Two-Story Ceilings
Sloped ceilings need a canopy or adapter rated for the actual pitch, and every fan has a maximum slope it can handle. Steeper pitches require a specific angled mount and usually a longer downrod so the blades clear the ceiling plane on the high side. Two-story entryways and vaulted great rooms also need the right access equipment, which is where a lot of homeowners get hurt trying to do it themselves while balancing a motor housing overhead on a ladder.

Outdoor and Patio Fans

Outdoor fans have to be listed for the conditions where they are mounted. Damp-rated fans are appropriate for fully covered porches and ramadas that never see direct water. Wet-rated fans, with sealed motors and all-weather blades, are what you need anywhere exposed to rain or spray, including pergolas with open slats and pool-adjacent areas. Why Fans Wobble and How We Fix It
Wobble is almost never a sign that the fan is about to fall, but it is a sign that something is off, and it usually gets worse. The most common causes are blades that are not the same weight or pitch as each other, a blade arm bent slightly out of plane, loose canopy or downrod screws, a mounting bracket that was never fully tightened to the box, or a box that is not securely fastened to framing. Signs Your Ceiling Fan Needs Attention
A fan that wobbles more than it used to, clicks or ticks once per rotation, hums audibly at low speed, runs hot at the canopy, has stopped responding to one or more speeds, or has a light kit that flickers is telling you something.
